When Life Gives You Lemons
A must-watch comedy, a beautiful Midwestern novel, wombats, and lemons.
Hello there,
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about habit. I’ve managed to get into a habit of running almost every day, which is something I never thought I’d be able to do, but working from home has made much easier. With no commute time, I’ve also been cooking a lot more, and lately I’ve been cooking healthier recipes. Where we live now, I’m surrounded by wildlife, and you’d be surprised how wild animals, too, are creatures of habit (like a really annoying woodpecker who likes to bang on our chimney in the morning, for example). It makes me hopeful to get into better daily habits.
Watch
Abbott Elementary (ABC on cable, Hulu on streaming) is my favorite new show. It’s a The Office and Parks & Rec-style mockumentary sitcom about a Philadelphia public school, and it is just pure delight. It’s sweet, earnest, and incredibly funny; the principal steals almost every scene she’s in. It’s impeccably cast, including a fully grown up Tyler James Williams of Everybody Hates Chris. Quinta Brunson, the show’s creator and star, brings realistic details to the show based on her mother’s long career as a Philly public school teacher. To all my teacher friends who read this: I really hope you’re watching!
Read
The Seed Keeper is a beautiful novel that spans multiple generations of a Dakota family living in Minnesota. It’s about family, agriculture, and the atrocities committed against the Dakota. And it will make you think completely differently about seeds.

Do
Lately I’ve been inundated with lemons so I’ve been making lemon curd, which is really delicious to mix in plain yogurt or to put on toast. I picked this recipe because it seemed easiest. (A few friends recommended I make preserved lemons, which seem really cool but I am far too lazy to procure and sterilize jars.) Any other ideas for relatively easy lemon recipes?
Until next time,
Rachel
