It's Okay to Cry
Things to watch and read to make you laugh and sniffle, good puppers, and more.
Hello there,
Somehow, we are still here, back in a situation where US ICUs are overflowing. Countries that have been models in tamping down the virus, like Australia and Israel, aren’t doing so great. And so many countries still have barely started chipping away at vaccinations. This pandemic just won’t end yet, will it? So I guess I’ll keep this distraction party going.
Watch
Coda (Apple TV) is a feel-good story about a hearing daughter in a deaf family who loves to sing. It’s great watch when you want a good, healthy cry and a nice entertainment cleanse. There’s also an absolutely amazing house on the water that’s fun to imagine living in.
Reservation Dogs (FX/Hulu) is about a group of indigenous teens living in rural Oklahoma. It’s a comedy from Taika Waititi, who’s behind What We Do in the Shadows, so I knew it would be good. The first episode isn’t as good as the subsequent two episodes, so just stick with it. It occurred to me while watching it that I’ve never seen a TV show entirely starring indigenous characters, and I hope it means we can expect more shows like this.
Read
The President and the Frog is a new book from Carolina de Robertis, who wrote the wonderful Cantoras. It’s a fictionalized tale about former Uruguayan President Pepe Mujica, and even though I’m very familiar with his story, I still found the book really moving and beautifully written. It’s a quick, tearful read about appreciating what’s important.

Do
I recently started drinking pea milk with my morning coffee. That’s P-E-A. It sounds disgusting, but it’s actually really nice and smooth, and is less sugary than oat milk.
Until next time,
